Today on the MWC Blog we're gonna be taking a look at each wrestler who have held the WWE Championship and I'll share you some information and whatnot regarding their reigns and my personal thoughts & opinions about them.
This is Part 2 of the WWE Champions discussion series, this time it's the second half of the 25 champions starting from The Boss himself to The Modern Day Maharaja!
So without further ado, let's get on with the discussion!
Total Combined Day(s): 4
A lot of people have been saying lately that "Jinder Mahal is the worst WWE Champion in history!" May I remind you that Vincent Kennedy McMahon won the freaking title at one point?!
Wrestling has thought me a valuable lesson that anyone can be World Champion whether you're the owner of a billion dollar company,a movie star,or the Archbishop of Talentbury!
In 1999 Vince and Triple H were having a little bit of a rivalry where VKM fought for the honor of his wife Linda which led to a No DQ Match on an episode of SmackDown, Triple H defending his WWF Title against his father-in-law.
After making Vince bloodied with his sledgehammer, Stone Cold interfered and destroyed HHH himself and then puts Vince's body on top of Hunter to get the victory! And that very moment we got the worst WWE Champion in history!
At least Vince was self aware of him having a long World Title reign would be an awful idea so 4 days later he vacated the belt. A 6-Pack Challenge at Unforgiven was set up to crown a new champion in the form of Triple H!
Total Combined Day(s): 78
Even though Big Show is one of the most notable names in WWE for the past two decades, his World Title runs weren't that extraordinary or memorable, in my opinion at least.
Show got his first WWF Title at Survivor Series 1999 winning in a Triple Threat Match against Triple H and The Rock. For 50 days he managed to beat guys like Big Boss Man,Kane, and British Bulldog for the title before losing the belt back at HHH on an episode of RAW.
Two years later he would get his second and last WWE Championship by defeating Brock Lesnar in Survivor Series (again!) But this time he would held the belt for a much shorter 28 days and dropped the belt to Kurt Angle at Armageddon. He also defended the title to Fabulous Moolah during this run which ended in a no contest so yeah...
Total Combined Day(s): 299
While I associate Kurt Angle more with the Big Gold (World Heavyweight Championship) he still had some great runs and moments as the WWE Champion! I mean why not right? He is a former Olympic Gold Medalist who in a short span of time quickly became one of the greatest all-around performers in wrestling!
Kurt got his first run with the belt at No Mercy 2000 beating The Rock in a No DQ match! During this time Kurt is killing it as a heel with his "American Hero" persona which the crowd loved to hate! He had a pretty good 126 day reign with the title before dropping it back to Rock at No Way Out the next year.
In Unforgiven 2001 Kurt won the title again in his home town of Pittsburgh beating "Stone Cold" Steve Austin! A wrestler winning in their hometowns is a rare sight nowadays in the WWE. Anyway he only held it for 15 days before Austin got the title back on RAW!
Kurt's final two reigns with the WWE Championship would be involved with his great feud against Brock Lesnar! Both men had amazing chemistry with each other both in and out of the ring, they had a wonderful match at WrestleMania 19 where Kurt got defeated by Brock during his 105 day reign.
He would take back the title at Vengeance 2003 in a Triple Threat with Brock and Big Show which he won. It would be his 4th and final reign with the WWE Championship which he held for 51 days before losing back the title to Lesnar in their classic 60 Minute Iron Man Match in SmackDown!
Total Combined Day(s): 98
Surprisingly Chris Jericho only held the WWE Championship once in his whole career! Crazy isn't it?
There's only one man who can say they defeated BOTH "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and The Rock at the same night and that is Chris Jericho! Y2J beat both of them in Vengeace 2001 to become the first Undisputed WWF Champion!
But unfortunately despite being one of the greatest all-around performers in wrestling, Y2J had a lackluster championship reign mainly because he got overshadowed by the return of Triple H whom WWE intended on pushing instead!
He did have a decent match record with the WWF Championship and the only time he loss clean was at WrestleMania 18 where he dropped the belt to HHH but considering what great of a talent Y2J is, it was an awful reign.
Y2J only held it for 98 days. For a man who managed to beat two of the biggest draws ever, he should have been given a proper title run!
Total Combined Day(s): 579
Brock Lesnar is one of the best (if not the best) dominant powerhouse WWE Champion in history! Ever since he made his debut from OVW, Lesnar was seen as a big deal in the company and to this day he still is.
He got his first WWE Championship at SummerSlam 2002 beating The Rock CLEAN! He would then have a great feud with Big Evil Undertaker where both men had fantastic and memorable matches for the title at Unforgiven and No Mercy which Brock won!
After 84 days with the title, Brock loss to Big Show at Survivor Series. He would then held the belt two more times during another great feud against Kurt Angle! Two of the biggest matches of Brock's first run with the WWE was during his feud with Kurt where he won both said matches at: WrestleMania 19 and at SmackDown on a 60 Minute Iron Man Match for the WWE Championship!
In his third run Brock had a dominant 152 day reign until he got defeated by the underdog Eddie Guerrero during their fantastic match at No Way Out 2004!
A decade later The Next Big Thing is now The Beast Incarnate. After dominating the world of UFC, Brock made his return to the WWE and in 2014 he squashed John Cena at SummerSlam to become the WWE Champion! This would be Brock's longest title reign of his career it lasted for 224 days.
He main evented WrestleMania 31 against Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship but Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase on his former Shield buddy to become the champion.
Now as of the writing of this blog, Brock Lesnar is the reigning WWE Universal Champion.
Total Combined Day(s): 133
The late great Eddie Guerrero was as we all know one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step foot in a squared circle and during his time only a few can match the greatness of Eddie!
During his final years in wrestling, Eddie became a beloved babyface with his "Lie,Cheat, and Steal" persona. He would have the biggest match of his career against Brock Lesnar in No Way Out 2004 for the WWE Championship which he won!
It was one of the greatest victories ever in wrestling! The Latino Heat would go on to successfully defend the title at WrestleMania 20 against Kurt Angle and would have a literal bloody feud with JBL!
After 133 days as champion, Eddie finally dropped the belt to JBL at Great American Bash in a Texas Bullrope match. Sadly a year later he would unexpectedly passed away.
John Bradshaw Layfield
Total Combined Day(s): 280
JBL's entire WWE Championship run can be summarized with a single Paul Heyman quote: "You're only champion because Triple H didn't wanna work Tuesdays!"
After many years of being a tag-team wrestler with Ron Simmons as APA, Bradshaw would eventually turn on his beer drinking buddy and became a Wall Street type of character. A snob rich guy similar to The Million Dollar Man, definitely one of the biggest drastic gimmick changes ever.
Anyways similar to Jinder Mahal now, JBL's WWE Title was seen out of nowhere beating Eddie Guerrero as I've mentioned earlier in Great American Bash 2004 in a Texas Bullrope match.
To JBL's credit he was a good heel champion, the fans despised him and just wanted the belt off him similar to Honky Tonk Man in the 80's as IC Champion! He had a surprisingly long reign that lasted beating challengers like Undertaker,Booker T,Kurt Angle, and The Big Show.
It wasn't until in WrestleMania 21 where a new star was born when John Cena defeated JBL ending his 280 day reign!
Total Combined Day(s): 1,257
John Cena holds the record for most WWE Championship title reigns with 13 and has tied Ric Flair's record of 16x World Championships! So yeah I'm not gonna go through every single one of his reigns, I'm mainly just gonna talk about Cena the champion himself.
The last major household name WWE Champion we got before John Cena was really "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Cena is pretty much synonymous with the WWE and wrestling at this point, he is one of the most recognizable names in the whole world!
I know this can be a little "controversial" but Cena is a good worker. He had memorable WWE Title bouts through the years with the likes of JBL,Edge,Orton,HBK,Punk,Rock, and Styles. Sure his character has gone stale at some point and some of his pushes and burial of talent I don't agree with (*cough* The Nexus *cough*) but we can't deny that Cena can be one of the best workers!
Sure he is not a technical wizard like Bret Hart or a highflying wonder like Rey Mysterio but Cena is a great storyteller in the ring. His facial expressions can sell the match and his opponent, his matches against AJ Styles are the best recent examples of these!
So whether you like him or not, you have to respect Cena. He is a rightful ambasaddor to the WWE due to him being a fan favorite among children,he has granted the most wishes out of anyone at the Make-a-Wish foundation. Plus many other great wrestlers and legends have put him over. He is the Hulk Hogan of this generation in terms of star power.
P.S. I still hate the spinner belt though.
Total Combined Day(s): 139
Adam Copeland has been a wrestling fan his whole life, he would get his first chance to shine in the WWF as Edge and being tag partners with his bestfriend Christian. Together they were one of the greatest tag-teams of all time and captured the World Tag-Team Titles 7 times!
Later on Edge would set out a singles career of his own and became in my opinion the greatest heel of the modern era in wrestling! I know Cena's best rival according to many is Orton but to me it would be Edge. The two of them had countless great matches and moments together!
When Edge had Lita by his side, his career skyrocketed fast. He won his first WWE Championship at New Year's Revolution 2006 cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase on John Cena! He would only hold it for 21 days though before dropping it back to Cena at the Royal Rumble.
In an episode of RAW at July 2006 Edge would win the belt back in a Triple Threat match against Cena & RVD. This time his reign would last up to 76 days and loss it to Cena again in a TLC match on Unforgiven 2006 in his hometown of Toronto no less!
At Survivor Series 2008 Edge was the surprise replacement for Jeff Hardy after he was attacked earlier in the night in a Triple Threat match against Triple H & Vladimir Kozlov for the WWE Championship. Edge won the title by pinning Triple H.
But once again Edge would have another short title reign that lasted for only 21 days when he dropped the belt back to Jeff Hardy at Armageddon 2006 with HHH being involved as well. Edge would have his 4th and final reign at Royal Rumble 2009 beating Jeff in a No DQ Match for the WWE Championship but again with only 21 days he loss the title to HHH in No Way Out the next month.
While Edge did have great moments with the WWE Championship, I would say he is more synonymous with the World Heavyweight Championship aka The Big Gold which he won a record 7 times! Also I might be one of the few who thought his Rated R Spinner belt (as seen above) was pretty cool.
Rob Van Dam
Total Combined Day(s): 22
Rob Van Dam's WWE Championship reign can be summed up with one question: "What could have been?"
In ECW One Night Stand 2006 RVD defeated John Cena in an intense match to become WWE Champion and also retaining his ECW Championship! It was still one of my favorite WWE Championship matches mainly because of the wild crowd! If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you do so.
Anyways things seem to be going well for The Whole F'king Show until he and Sabu got arrested one night for having drugs in their vehicle! Media outlets got hold of this situation and not so long after that RVD would drop the belt in an episode of RAW in a Triple Threat match involving Cena & Edge which the latter won.
Such a shame really. RVD is a one of a kind athlete (pun intended) and it sucks that his WWE Championship reign was cut short due to an unfortunate situation.
Total Combined Day(s): 660
Randy Orton is tied with Triple H for second most reigns with the WWE Championship! Some might find him a good champion, while some find him boring. I personally don't mind Orton, he is a good performer especially as a heel. So let's go all through his reigns shall we?
When John Cena vacated the WWE Championship in October 2007 after suffering an injury, Randy Orton was awarded the title by Vince McMahon in No Mercy at the same year. Triple H would then do an open challenge to Orton and the two had a match which HHH won, the same night Orton used his rematch clause and defeated HHH and became WWE Champion!
Orton would hold onto the title for an impressive 203 days. He loss it at Backlash 2008 in a Fatal 4 Way Elimination match against Triple H,Cena, and JBL. A year later at the same PPV Legacy defeated the team of Triple H,Shane McMahon, and Batista to win the WWE Championship in a 6 Man Tag match. He would only hold it for 42 days when loss the belt to Batista at Extreme Rules in a steel cage match.
Unfortunately for Batista he suffered an injury and was forced to vacate the title. On RAW a Fatal 4 Way between Cena,HHH,Big Show, and Orton was held for the vacant WWE Championship which The Viper won. During this time Orton began his high profile feud against John Cena, him and Cena would trade the belt back and forth throughout 2009.
His 6th run with the title was at Night of Champions 2010 winning a 6-Pack Challenge match. 64 days in after successfully defending the title against Wade Barrett in an episode of RAW, The Miz cashed in his MITB to Orton losing the title.
In 2013 he disappointed the fans when he cashed in he himself cashed in his MITB briefcase on Daniel Bryan with help from Triple H and having his 7th run with the WWE Championship! D-Bry would win the title at Night of Champions 28 days later but was vacated the next night on RAW due to the controversial finish to the match.
At Hell in a Cell Orton defeated Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship with Shawn Michaels as the special guest ref. Later on he would also beat John Cena at TLC for the World Heavyweight Championship, unifying both belts and becoming the Undisputed WWE World Heavyweight Champion!
He would held onto the belt until WrestleMania 30 where Daniel Bryan finally successfully won the title at the main event in a Triple Threat against Orton & Batista! Still one of the greatest moments in Mania history!
Orton's 9th and latest reign as we know occurred at WrestleMania 33 defeating Bray Wyatt. 49 days into his reign he surprisingly loss the belt to Jinder Mahal at Backlash this year!
Total Combined Day(s): 42
Jeff Hardy seemed to be destined to become a top star at the WWE. He is a great performer, had a great tag-team run,and loved by the fans especially the female demographic!
But unfortunately his personal demons always got in the way. He had his first and only WWE Championship reign at Armageddon 2008 winning the belt in a Triple Threat match that involved Edge and Triple H.
The company was worried about Jeff's status though and sent him to rehab, his reign only lasted for 42 days when he dropped it to Edge at the Royal Rumble 2009. Not so long after that he would leave the WWE and go to TNA.
Hopefully now that he is back in the company we would see a proper Jeff Hardy World Title run in the WWE before he decides to retire!
Total Combined Day(s): 37
Similar to Big Show despite being one of the most recognizable names of the company, Batista didn't particularly have a memorable run with the WWE Championship.
He got his first WWE Championship at Extreme Rules beating Randy Orton in a steel cage match but unfortunately only held the belt for 2 days after suffering torn left biceps, he was forced to vacate the belt.
Batista had his second run winning the title against John Cena in the Elimination Chamber PPV. He was granted a match by Mr. McMahon after Cena just won the title in an Elimination Chamber match so it was an easy win for The Animal!
Only 35 days in though Batista would dropped the belt back to Cena in the semi main event of WrestleMania 26. He hasn't won the title back since.
Like with Edge I remember Batista's run with the World Heavyweight Championship much better. His matches with The Undertaker for said belt were great and definitely solidified Batista as a solid worker!
Total Combined Day(s): 184
I don't hate Sheamus, in fact I'm liking his tag-team run he has with Cesaro right now. What I'm not a big fan of are his WWE Championship runs.
The Celtic Warrior shocked the world by winning his first WWE Title from John Cena no less in a tables match on TLC 2009! 70 days into his reign he dropped the belt back to Cena.
Sheamus' second reign with the title happened in the Fatal 4 Way PPV (which I completely forgot about until doing research for this blog) by winning a match involving Cena,Edge, and Orton. He had a much longer 91 day reign although to be honest, it was forgettable in my opinion. He dropped the belt in a 6-Pack Challenge match on Night of Champions 2010.
His third and final reign so far was the one the fans hated the most, at Survivor Series 2015 the tournament for the vacant WWE Championship had it's finals between Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns which the latter won. But just a few minutes in after celebrating, with some help from Triple H, Sheamus cashed in his MITB briefcase to win against Reigns and become WWE Champion!
The fans absolutely hated it and not in a "good heel heat" kind of way but "X-Pac heat" then we also got that stupid Sheamus 5:15 catchphrase, trying to recapture the glory of Austin 3:16.
Sheamus dropped the title back to Reigns after just 22 days at an episode of RAW. He is the first and only Irish wrestler to win the belt so that's pretty cool I guess.
Total Combined Day(s): 160
There is one good thing to come out of The Miz's awful run as WWE Champion during 2010 to 2011 and that is the image of the "evil girl" reacting when he cashed in his MITB against Randy Orton to win the WWE Championship!
Nowadays we probably wouldn't be angry if Miz became the World Champion again since he has vastly improved his character since he first won the title. The fans never liked Miz as champion, they hated him so much that the fans actually started cheering for Cena!
In his lengthy 160 day reign he managed to main event WrestleMania 27 as the champion and surprised everyone by defeating John freaking Cena! With some help from The Rock of course. Miz was an afterthought at this point as the WWE was more focused on building up Rock vs Cena for next year's Mania.
At Extreme Rules 2011 Miz finally dropped the belt to John Cena in a triple threat cage match also involving John Morrison.
Total Combined Day(s): 463
CM Punk is one of (if not the) best WWE Champion of the modern era! After cutting his iconic "pipe bomb" promo CM Punk quickly rose to the top and became one of the favorites within the wrestling community!
Money in the Bank 2011 we had an amazing match between John Cena and CM Punk for the WWE Championship which was the first 5-Star WWE match rated by Dave Meltzter in decades! The last one was Bret Hart vs Stone Cold at WrestleMania 13.
Punk won the belt from Cena in his hometown of Chicago and "left" the company with the belt. As mentioned by Steve & Larson they should have went in more with this angle like having Punk appear on the indies such as ROH with the championship, just to make things more interesting! But nah they didn't do any of that.
At SummerSlam 2011 Punk defeated Cena who was also crowned "champion" when Punk left to determine the real WWE Champion between the two of them. The self proclaimed Best in the World won with Triple H as the special guest referee, but later on after being attacked by Kevin Nash and Alberto Del Rio cashing in his MITB, Punk loss the championship after a total of 35 days.
His most well known reign was his second run with the belt at Survivor Series 2011 he defeated Alberto Del Rio and that began his 435 day reign as WWE Champion which is the longest World title reign of the modern day WWE!
Sadly though despite Punk being THE champ at the time, he wasn't treated as such. He was overshadowed by the feud of The Rock & John Cena. He did have impressive matches and feuds most notably against Chris Jericho during this time but with the talent that Punk has, it's a shame they didn't use him like a true main eventer.
Punk's historic 435 day reign ended at the hands of The Rock at the Royal Rumble 2013. The next year he would leave the company for good.
Total Combined Day(s): 1 hour, 46 minutes
Gotta feel bad for Rey Mysterio. He has always been one of my favorites and it sucks that his WWE Championship reign lasted only lasted for an hour!
When CM Punk "left" with the WWE Championship, the WWE held a tournament on RAW to determine a "new champion" which Rey won. But the same night later on, Cena would challenge Rey for the belt and loss the title.
Such a shame, Rey is a huge draw and an incredible performer, he deserves better than a 1 hour reign with the WWE Title! His World Heavyweight Championship reign wasn't great as well but at least he held onto that belt for longer.
Alberto Del Rio
Total Combined Day(s): 84
Even though Alberto Del Rio is a good performer and a 2nd generation superstar coming from a great wrestling family in Mexico, the fans just never liked him during his initial run with the company.
He won his first WWE Championship by cashing in his Money in the Bank on CM Punk at SummerSlam 2011. It was a huge moment for Del Rio but the fans hated it! Similar to Sheamus it received "X-Pac heat" which isn't good.
His first reign only lasted for 35 days when he dropped it to John Cena at Night of Champions. The same year Del Rio got the title back in a triple threat against Cena & Punk on Hell in a Cell, this one lasted a little longer for 49 days when he dropped the belt to CM Punk at Survivor Series.
Just mainly forgettable runs from Del Rio, he is having a good run at Impact Wrestling right now though for what it's worth.
Total Combined Day(s): 65
Due to his terrific all-around skills as a performer, Daniel Bryan was a beloved wrestler among the wrestling community!
D-Bry finally got the WWE Championship for the first time in SummerSlam 2013 defeating John Cena! Although unfortunately with some help from Triple H, the same night he loss the belt to Randy Orton who cashed in his Money in the Bank. He won the belt again at Night of Champions 2013 but the next night on RAW the title was vacated due to the "controversial finish" of the match.
2014 the "YES! Movement" was starting to grow bigger and bigger! Daniel Bryan was backed up by the fans so much that the WWE were forced to change their plans and finally gave him a chance once again for the WWE Championship.
In WrestleMania 30, Daniel Bryan performed in two great matches the first one was against Triple H so he could enter himself at the main event. The second one was the main event for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, D-Bry managed to overcome all the odds and win against Randy Orton & Batista and become the new champion!
To this day it is still the best WrestleMania victory in my opinion. After many years of working hard in the indies, working his way to the top,Daniel Bryan finally earned what he truly deserves!
But sadly due to poor storylines and injuries getting in the way, D-Bry had a lackluster run as the WWE Champion. His feud with Kane was awful and due to neck injury he was forced to vacate the title just 64 days in.
Total Combined Day(s): 220
WrestleMania 31, Brock Lesnar vs Roman Reigns is the main event for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship when suddenly Mr. Money in the Bank Seth Rollins inferfered and cashed in his briefcase and pinned his former Shield comrade!
That is still one of the best MITB cash-ins in WWE history! Roman Reigns' mom's reaction said it all!
Rollins had a pretty good run as a heel champion. He had some memorable matches while the champion successfully defending it in a Fatal 4 Way against Ambrose,Reigns, and Orton on Payback 2015. Also Rollins vs Neville at RAW was memorable as well, with Neville almost won the belt!
We also saw him successfully defend the WWE Championship and win the United States Championship in the process on SummerSlam 2015 beating John Cena! Night of Champions 2015 Rollins had the "unfortunate" honor of ending Sting's career during their WWE Championship match.
Sadly though Seth would get injured himself at a house show and was forced to vacate the title that he held for 220 days!
He would win it back at Money in the Bank 2016 defeating Roman Reigns but just minutes later, Dean Ambrose who just won the MITB Ladder match cashed in on Rollins and became champion!
Total Combined Day(s): 118
Here we are with everyone's favorite Samoan: Roman Reigns! Okay maybe not everyone...
Roman Reigns is an excellent wrestler and has a great look, his promo skills need a lot of work though and his charisma is still lacking. But because of how awful he was booked, being immediately pushed at the top the fans resented him!
He can be champion material down the line but not so early which is why the fans hate him and still do to this day. He won the vacant WWE Championship at Survivor Series 2015 but only held it for a short time when Sheamus cashed in his MITB briefcase immediately.
Reigns would capture the belt back at an episode of RAW. He would held onto the belt until at Royal Rumble 2016 when the Rumble match was for his WWE Title, he loss and Triple H became the new champion.
This would lead to one of the worst main events in WrestleMania history with Triple H defending the WWE Championship against Roman Reigns. It was a match that seemed like you'll see at an episode of RAW, plus all 100,000+ fans in the arena were showering it with boo's. As we know Reigns won and had his "official crowning moment" in front of a crowd that despises him! Excellent.
He would have great matches with the belt against guys like AJ Styles and his Shield comrades but he just wasn't ready for this level yet, again he had X-Pac levels of heat. He is a babyface that is being boo'd.
As JDFromNY said they tried everything to get Reigns over: Triple H,Stephanie,League of Nations, and even Vince McMahon himself but nope. He is still universally hated.
Roman Reigns seems to be a great guy in real life but boy his character desperately needs a change, it did wonders for his cousin Rock but WWE is stubborn on doing so. He is not getting the treatment like Cena where the fans are split on him, everybody literally hates him!
You know someone it's bad when even with The Rock, Roman still gets boo'd!
Total Combined Day(s): 84
Out of all the former Shield wrestlers, it was Dean Ambrose whom I enjoyed the most as WWE Champion!
He finally won the title at Money in the Bank 2016 cashing on Seth Rollins. He would successfully defend the title at BattleGround 2016 in a dream match against both Reigns & Rollins!
When the roster split happened in 2016, Ambrose was drafted to SmackDown Live and became the face of the brand as WWE Champion! His first feud was against Ziggler which was underwhelming. They had a decent match at SummerSlam 2016 but nothing memorable.
His best feud though was against AJ Styles! With the addition of James Ellsworth, it became the hottest storyline and rivalry in WWE at the time! For me that was the pinnacle of SmackDown Live, it's what made it such a better and enjoyable show than RAW!
Styles & Ambrose had amazing chemistry with each other. The Lunatic Fringe would eventually drop the belt at Backlash 2016 to AJ Styles after 84 days as champion!
Total Combined Day(s): 140
To this day I still think it's crazy that AJ Styles is officially in the record books as a former WWE Champion! If you would have told me this in 2011 I would say you're crazy! For the longest time, AJ Styles is synonymous with TNA, now he is one of the top talents in the WWE!
Even though CM Punk is indeed the longest reigning WWE Champion in the modern era, I think AJ Styles is a better champion than Punk in my opinion. I know I might rustle a lot of people's jimmies with that statement but hey it's just my opinion, no need to get all fuzzy about it.
Styles won the belt at Backlash 2016 defeating Dean Ambrose. During his 140 day reign, Styles was involved in some great and memorable matches against both Ambrose and John Cena! Their Triple Threat match at No Mercy 2016 was still one of the best triple threat matches I've seen in recent memory!
AJ's feud against John Cena is still my favorite feud throughout 2016. The two always delivered on great matches and promos against one another. Styles reign finally ended at the hands of his rival at their amazing match on Royal Rumble 2017 when Cena became a 16x World Champion.
Hopefully this isn't the last time we'll see AJ Styles with the WWE Championship again. He has truly proved himself as The Face That Runs The Place!
Total Combined Day(s): 49
Bray Wyatt has been one of the fan favorites among the wrestling community, his character was a breath of fresh air and always had some good promos. Plus he isn't that too shabby in the ring. But sadly he always loses his feuds and never managed to back up his talk.
Until at Elimination Chamber 2017 when the tables finally seemed to have turned on Bray when he pinned CLEAN both AJ Styles and John Cena to become the new WWE Champion! Everyone was excited, the championship that alluded him for a long time, he has finally won it!
But again everything went downhill for Bray quickly when his "disciple" Randy Orton turned on him by burning his house. Since Orton won the Royal Rumble, he faced Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 33 for the WWE Championship and we all know how that went.
After weeks of build and anticipation, what we got was a disappointing and honestly an awful match. WWE then proceeded to add insult to injury when Bray loss the title to Orton in a very anticlimatic finish. The two part timers Goldberg & Brock Lesnar had a better match than Bray & Orton which is a shame, the two could have delivered something great but failed.
We would then have the infamous House of Horrors match at Payback 2017 which Bray at least won over Randy with help from Jinder Mahal but it was a non-title match. The House of Horros was the conclusion to the atrocity that was the Wyatt-Orton feud.
You would think after managing to pin both Cena & Styles clean that Bray would finally become the dominant heel champion he was always supposed to be! WWE gave us a glimmer of hope, but quickly axed that down.
Total Combined Day(s): 13 (ongoing)
Last but certainly not the least, the man who has the honor of being the 50th wrestler to become WWE Champion is none other than Jinder Mahal! Who would've have thought of this just three years ago?!
Yes folks, your eyes are not deceiving you. Jinder Mahal as of the writing of this blog, is the current reigning WWE Champion! He is the first Indian wrestler to have held it.
Now obviously the fans are mixed about Jinder being the champion, some loves it while some hates it. I personally don't mind Jinder as the champion right now, what I do hate is the lack of build to him becoming champion.
During an episode of SmackDown Live a 6-Pack Challenge match was scheduled to determine the new No. 1 Contender for Randy Orton's WWE Championship. To the surprise of many, with the help of The Singh Brothers (fka Bollywood Boyz) Jinder Mahal won the match! Just like that, out of nowhere!
Just weeks before this, Jinder was essentially a "jobber to the stars" similar to Curt Hawkins and here he is the No. 1 contender for the most prestigious belt ever!
The Modern Day Maharaja would proceed to shock the world once again by actually winning the WWE Championship at the main event of Backlash 2017 beating Randy Orton with some "assistance" from his lackeys!
I hope Jinder would actually have a good run with the belt, he is scheduled against Orton on Money in the Bank 2017 at St. Louis,Missouri. This is Orton's hometown and you know WWE likes to have hometown heroes lose so we might just see Jinder successfully defend the title!
So that concludes this discussion blog post about all 50 wrestlers who have held the WWE Championship!
Thanks For Reading.
