Without further ado, let's get into this shall we?
6 Women's Tag-Team Match:
Becky,Nikki,& Naomi def. Bliss,Mickie,& Natalya
I really thought the heels were gonna win this one considering it's Mickie James' first match on her return in the main roster but I guess they're building up Naomi vs Alexa for the next PPV as she got the pin on the SD Women's Champion.
Just your standard 6 Women's Tag match, nothing really spectacular to see.
RAW Tag-Team Championships:
The Club def. Cesaro & Sheamus
This one I got another prediction wrong as I thought Cesaro & Sheamus would retain the belts for now. After all they were the ones who ended New Day's record long reign but they had The Club finally win the tag belts! In the pre-show...
I know I'm supposed to be like overly happy about this but to be honest I'm not. I'm glad Gallows & Anderson have the belts but it's just too late for me now. They should've won the belts much earlier, around the time they debut but instead their focus was New Day beating Demolition's record.
It doesn't help when The Club won the belts in front of a half full crowd, I reckon they should've had this on the main card instead but whatever!
As for the match itself, it's just what you'll expect to see in an episode of RAW. All four wrestlers are good workers so you won't really get a bad match from them.
Nia Jax def. Sasha Banks
Speaking of bad match, this one is just awful. Nia beat Sasha in what is almost like a "squash match." I guess they're trying to book Nia Jax as a dominant women ala Awesome Kong? But I just don't feel that way about her.
Meltzer gave this match 1 star so I guess that's enough for you to know how bad this match was.
RAW Women's Championship:
Charlotte def. Bayley
I know both of these women are great and talented but this match was just disappointing for me. Plus I wasn't a fan of the way Bayley loss this match.
There's only one word to describe this match and that was "meh." Charlotte retains as expected, continues her PPV streak which will probably end at WrestleMania.
WWE Universal Championship:
Kevin Owens def. Roman Reigns
This match delivered though and is only behind the Styles vs Cena match in terms of Match of the Night! Owens and Reigns delivered in a great brawl and I thought Reigns was gonna win the belt here but they got Braun Strowman interfere and attack Reigns, putting him through a table which allowed KO to secure the victory!
I'm glad Owens is still Universal Champion but the moment that happened. I knew AJ Styles was gonna lose his belt later on, the WWE just won't have two World Title retains in one night.
WWE Cruiserweight Championship:
Neville def. Rich Swann
Like many have said 205 Live shouldn't be in big arenas yet but on NXT-esque events with much smaller crowds. That's what got the CWC so over, a lot of the wrestlers there aren't known by the fans yet, you have to build them up first and that's when you bring them in to the main roster.
Guys like TJP,Mustafa Ali,Tozawa,Tony Nese,Drew Gulak,Cedric Alexander,Noam Dar,and everyone's favorite Ho Ho Lun would get much bigger crowd reactions once you build their characters in 205 Live and then debut them on RAW.
Anyways sorry about the rant, like I said Neville & Swann delivered a good match with the self proclaimed King of the Cruiserweights gaining victory on this one! We now have a new Cruiserweight Champion in form of Neville so hopefully this is one step on making the Cruiserweight division great again!
Have him feud with Jack Gallagher next, he's the only real over babyface in that division right now anyway!
WWE World Championship:
John Cena def. AJ Styles
These two gave us another instant classic match and in my opinion they've top their performance at SummerSlam! Meltzer gave it a 4.75 star rating but for me it easily is a 5-Star!
Some even say it's already better than the Omega vs Okada match, that's how good this match is! Also AJ Styles didn't look weak or got buried so shut up about it. He managed to kick out of 3 AA's, one of them being an over the top rope variation of said move.
I really wanted Styles to win and have him be WWE Champion up until Mania but it looks like that won't be the case since Cena has now officially tied Ric Flair's record of 16x World Championship reigns and don't be shock once he beats said record anytime soon!
Whatever you think of John Cena whether you love him or hate him, you can't deny this was one of the best matches of his career, I think AJ Styles really brings the best out of everyone he faces! He puts on good matches not only with Cena, but with Reigns too, a testament to how great of a worker he really is.
Kudos to both men for a match all of us will never forget!
30-Man Royal Rumble Match:
Randy Orton Wins
Anyway US Champion Chris Jericho was No. 2 and the ring started to fill up with more wrestlers as we get through the match. No. 3 we got Kalisto who was an unannounced entrant so hooray I guess? No. 4 Mojo Rawley who got in after winning a battle royal in SmackDown.
Which is a thing I need to speak about by the way, most of the wrestlers who were in this match just flat out say "I will be in the Royal Rumble!" but guys like Sami Zayn and Mojo Rawley have to work their way in it? Just seems unfair from a kayfabe stand point if you ask me but whatever.
No. 5 we got the true first surprise entrant which is Gentleman Jack Gallagher accompanied by William the III the Umbrella! Corey Graves, you're not the only one marking out for this entrant! Gallagher pretty much had fun with everybody in their with the help of his trusty umbrella, even hit Y2J on the nether regions with it!
Until on No. 6 we got the return of Mark Henry! The World's Strongest Man got a huge pop from the crowd considering it's his home state of Texas after all. Henry eliminated Gallagher, having our first elimination of the night.
No. 7 we got one of the odds on favorite to win: Braun Strowman! I didn't expect Strowman to come in so early so kinda surprised me he's in the single digit entrants. Strowman cleaned house as expected eliminating Mojo,Big Cass,Kalisto, and Mark Henry! Y2J got out of the ring after realizing Strowman is in there so he was safe.
Then we got Strowman's old rival Sami Zayn came out! The two brawled for a while before we got to No. 9, it's The Big Show everybody! Show looks in great shape, as we know he's been working out for his final match at WrestleMania against Shaq. Speaking of which, I expected Shaq to be involved in Show's elimination in one way or another whether as an entrant or interferance to build up their match but obviously not since did not appear at all.
Anyway we got the "battle of the giants" between Show and Strowman, with Braun getting the better out of Big Show eliminating him in what was a sort of "passing of the torch" moment.
No. 10 is here and the crowd went nuts and so did I for The Perfect 10 himself: Tye Dillinger! We all knew it was coming but I still marked out anyway, glad to see Dillinger in there and even though he didn't do much it's still a satisfying entrant! Speaking of 10, I'm glad the crowd did not chant "10!" at all during count downs with the exception of the entrant no. 10 of course which was understandable so good on you San Antonio for not being annoying smarks!
Up next at the No. 11 spot we got James Freaking Ellsworth! He came out there with his "girlfriend" Carmella. The Ellsworth flavor has already became bland, WWE has overused a meme to the point where it's not even funny anymore. I like Ellsworth as a person but his Rumble spot was a waste. I would have given it instead to "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan for some nostalgic effect, plus considering he's the first ever winner of the Royal Rumble and this is the Rumble's 30th anniversary so it just makes sense right?
No. 12 the Intercontinental Champion Dean Ambrose comes out next. Ambrose faked Ellsworth into getting in the ring with him since Strowman was in there, Strowman gave Ellsworth a nasty chokeslam out of the ring! I thought Ellsworth got injured there for a second, it was sick bump but luckily he didn't get hurt. Ambrose,Zayn, and Dillinger then tried to triple team on Strowman but were ultimately unsuccessful.
Strowman eliminated Dillinger much to the crowd's dismay. Lucky No. 13 is next, we got "The Lone Wolf" Baron Corbin! Another triple team to Braun this time with Corbin joining in which is a little ironic considering his ephithet. Anyways after Zayn gave the Helluva Kick to Strowman, Corbin shocked the world by clotheslining Braun outta the ring eliminating him in his Royal Rumble debut! I myself was shocked when this happened, I like that Corbin is getting the push. Thought he deserves it after improving a lot ever since his debut at WrestleMania 32 winning the Andre Battle Royal.
No. 14 we got Mr. Royal Rumble: Kofi Kingston! Kofi's "rumble spot" this year was underwhelming. He got up to the ring post supporting the turnbuckles and was about to be eliminated by Corbin but just managed to hang on, it was definitely disappointing in comparison to the previous ones he did. No. 15 The Miz comes out, but not to Daniel Bryan's music but just his usual theme song. Oh well, we can't have everything we want do we?
At this point the ring starts to fill up with more wrestlers, Numbers 16-25 we got Sheamus,Big E,Rusev (sporting a face mask),Cesaro,Xavier Woods,Bray Wyatt,Apollo Crews,Randy Orton,Dolph Ziggler, and Luke Harper.
They got Jerry "The King" Lawler on commentary for the rumble match and I thought he would be involved in the elimination of Dolph Ziggler or would at least somewhat interfere but nah, screw continuity I guess. Harper also finally got out of the Wyatt Family and almost hits Bray with the Sister Abigail but Orton just managed to save his new leader by hitting Harper with an RKO!
Then we got all 3 members of The New Day getting eliminated by both Cesaro & Sheamus, afterwards Sheamus tried eliminating his tag-team partner but failed leading to an argument between the two so Y2J took advantage and eliminated them both! That's 5 eliminations under 30 seconds!
No. 26 one of the big names for this year's Rumble we got "The Beast Incarnate" Brock Lesnar make his way to the ring! Suplexes for everybody hooray! Brock eliminates Ziggler and Ambrose, poor Ambrose got eliminated like a jabroni which sucks cause that's not how you treat your IC Champion and the man who worked the most matches in 2016. Enzo Amore comes out as a "surprise entrant" in No. 27 and as expected got the shit beat outta him by Brock and eliminated!
I thought Enzo's spot was another waste. Would've been funnier if we got Gillberg instead! Brock vs Gillberg, who doesn't wanna see that even for just a glimpse second? And then it would have been much more perfect considering who's No. 28: Goldberg!
Goldberg pulled off a shocker once again, spearing Brock and eliminated him fast! Goldberg 2, Lesnar 0! Goldberg also eliminated Rusev and Luke Harper. Second to the last entrant No. 29 it's The Undertaker! We got a Taker and Goldberg face off which was definitely nice to see. What's not nice to see is Undertaker being out of shape...
I'm a huge Undertaker fan and it sucks to see him at this point of his career, I know he makes tons of money but I don't wanna see him turn into Andre the Giant whom in the twilight years of his career was barely able to walk. Plus we received news of Taker hurting after the match so those aren't good signs at all.
After Goldberg and Taker's face off they got interrupted by Corbin and Miz. Taker eliminates both of them later on and even eliminated Goldberg much to the shock of the fans! Taker also eliminated my favorite to win: Sami Zayn!
And then we got to the infamous No. 30. A lot of people were expecting the likes of Samoa Joe and Finn Balor, while yours truly was expecting "Medal" to hit and out comes Kurt Angle but no.... a different Samoan named Joe comes out the reaction of wrestling fans around the world perfectly sums it all up.
What a blatant "FUCK YOU!" to the fans! As if that wasn't enough, Reigns eliminates The Undertaker so the rumors of a Reigns vs Taker match at Mania sparks truth now for what it seems like. The only way I can see this match being somewhat good is Reigns being a heel, otherwise if he goes or comes out into this a match as a "babyface" it would be career suicide for this man.
Another thing Reigns barely sold his match against Owens earlier tonight. But Owens the next night on RAW was all up in stitches, while Reigns went in the rumble like nothing happened! Such bullshit!
The final four we got Reigns,Y2J,Bray,and Randy! For real I thought Reigns was gonna win there which I was so scared about, he eliminated Y2J and got double teamed for a moment by The Wyatts until he eliminated Bray! He then received an RKO before being eliminated by Randy Orton! Thank goodness!
Randy Orton wasn't my pick to win this match and honestly I hope we don't get a Cena vs Orton match at Mania for the millionth time but I guess that's better than Reigns winning the Rumble again cause that would've cause chaos! I would much prefer Bray winning it than Randy but maybe Bray wins the Chamber match and that's where we get Orton vs Bray at Mania? I don't know, too early still to make speculations.
Just a few notes here before I end the review: Y2J now holds the record for most accumulative time in the Royal Rumble match with 4 hours! Kane also didn't appear this year which was a bit odd since he's been in every single rumble for the past 21 years.
Also 3 out of the 4 Evolution members: Orton,HHH,and Batista are now 2x Royal Rumble Winners. Thought that was a nice little fun fact.
We also didn't get both Seth Rollins and Triple H in the Rumble. We did have a nice little segment at TakeOver: San Antonio where Rollins "hijacked" the show and HHH sent out security, building up to there feud. Also the next night on RAW, Samoa Joe finally made his debut at the main roster attacking Rollins on behalf of HHH but unfortunately suffered an injury in the middle of the altercation so get well soon to Rollins! Hopefully he doesn't miss another Mania.
The Royal Rumble PPV itself was half good and half bad. The early parts were good but as we get near to the conclusion, everything just went downhill from there. Especially with the awful No. 30 entrant which overshadowed everything, definitely the worst surprise entrant in Royal Rumble history! But hey, at least Reigns didn't win right?
I'll also try to make reviews for other big PPV's of other major promotions such as NJPW,ROH,TNA,etc. Trying to expand the content more on the blog so leave your suggestions below.
Also for those who care, around this week the first member of the MWC Hall of Fame Class of 2017 will be announced so just stay tuned.
Thanks For Reading.
