Throughout the years there have been a number of great families in professional wrestling and were gonna countdown them all to 10 here in MWC. Were gonna take a look at those families that produced some of the greatest superstars of all time, a lot of them became legends too.
But before we do that I'm gonna set some restrictions here; first is the McMahon family as we all know are the most powerful and influential family in the wrestling business, but they won't be included in the list because none of them are exactly trained wrestlers (with the exception of Triple H.)
And also were gonna have families that have more than 2 members that made it in the wrestling business so the likes of Brisco Brothers and The Moscas won't be included as well despite them being legends.
So now that's out of the way, let's begin the list!
Larry "The Axe" Hennig
"Mr. Perfect" Curt Hennig
It all started with the legend; Larry "The Axe" Hennig who found success in various promotions such as the NWA and AWA. He was trained by Verne Gagne. The Axe also had a short run in the WWF and later on in WWE as the manager of his grandson; Curtis Axel.
Curt Hennig aka Mr. Perfect became the biggest superstar out of all the Hennig family members. He is best known for his time in the WWF as well as in WCW. He is considered one of the best Intercontinental Champions of all time!
His children; Curtis Axel is still actively competing in the WWE today but is still far away from the success of his father and grandfather, his sister; Amy Hennig currently competes in the indies.
"Iron" Mike DiBiase
"Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase
Ted DiBiase Jr.
Mike DiBiase II
"Iron" Mike DiBiase is the patriarch of the DiBiase family, he married Ted DiBiase Sr's mother Helen Hild who is also a professional wrestler. He mainly wrestled in various NWA territories and is probably best known for suffering a heart attack in the ring while in a match against Man Mountain Mike.
Ted DiBiase Sr. is the most successful out of all the DiBiase family members. He found big success under the Million Dollar Man gimmick and became one of the best heels in WWE history! He has been inducted in the HOF in 2010.
All three of his sons became wrestlers as well; Ted DiBiase Jr. is so far the only to step foot in the WWE but didn't found too much success unlike his father. Mike II and Brett all wrestled in the indies until recently retiring due to various injuries.
Dory Funk Sr.
Dory Funk Jr.
Dory Funk IV
The Funks are probably the best known wrestling family in all of Texas. Dory Funk Sr. started the whole rampage and was a successful amateur wrestler before turning pro. After his retirement he turned into a promoter.
His sons; Dory Jr. and Terry all became successful in pro wrestling! Dory Jr. mainly found success in the NWA and Japan while Terry was best known for his hardcore style days in ECW!
Dory Jr's grandson; Dory Funk IV is currently training in his grandfather's school to become a pro wrestler so The Funk legacy is definitely far from over!
Paul "Butcher" Vachon
Maurice "Mad Dog" Vachon
The Vachon Brothers; Paul & Maurice dominated the tag-team scene in various Canadian territories and AWA. They became two time AWA Tag-Team Champions and found success by themselves as well.
Their sister; Vivian Vachon also found success in wrestling after following her brothers' footsteps. She became a one time AWA Women's Champion as well as finding success in Japan.
The Butcher's adoptive daughter; Luna Vachon was also a successful wrestler. She is best known for her run in the WWF and is very underrated women's wrestler.
"IRS" Mike Rotunda
Blackjack Mulligan is the patriarch of this family and is best known for his tag-team run with good friend; Blackjack Lanza as The Blackjacks one of the most successful tag-teams of all time. Mulligan is also considered as one of wrestling's greatest big men.
His sons followed his footsteps as well. Barry Windham is best known as one of the original Four Horsemen and has found success in various promotions such as the WWF and WCW.
His brother Kendall wasn't as memorable though, he had a short run in WCW but most of it was forgettable.
Mike Rotunda is the brother-in-law of Barry Windham and together they were the U.S. Express in their early days on WWF managed by Capt. Lou Albano. Then Rotunda found bigger fame with his second gimmick when he was re-packaged as Irwin R. Schyster (IRS) when he was partnered with Million Dollar Man as Money Inc.
All of Mike Rotunda's children became wrestlers as well and fans of this generation are definitely familiar with them. Bray Wyatt and Bo Dallas current WWE Superstars are in fact brothers and they are sons of IRS. Their sister; Samantha is reportedly being trained for a NXT Tryout.
Rhodes Family (Dusty,Cody,Goldust)
Poffo Family (Angelo,"Macho Man" Randy Savage,Lanny)
Bevis Family (Ricky Knight,Sweet Soraya,Paige,The UK Hooligans)
Flair Family (Ric,Charlotte,David,Reid)
Colon Family (Carlos,Carlito,Los Matadores/Primo & Epico)
Dusek Family (Ernie,Emil,Rudy,Joe)
"The Big O" Bob Orton Sr.
"Cowboy" Bob Orton Jr.
"The Big O" Bob Orton Sr. wrestled around the NWA and AWA. He also wrestled at the humble beginnings of WWWF and was tag-team partners with "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers.
His sons became professional wrestlers as well; "Cowboy" Bob Orton being the most successful one and became one of wrestling's biggest heels and was best known for his tag-team run with "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Don Muraco.
His brother; Barry Orton also wrestled for the WWF but he was nothing more than a jobber and rarely won matches, he was also rumored to be one of Pat Patterson's "boys" but that's a story for another time!
Quite possibly the most successful member of the Orton Family is; Randy Orton. At this point of his career he is already considered a veteran in the WWE and has won the WWE World Heavyweight title a total of 8 times!
Von Erich Family
Fritz Von Erich
Kevin Von Erich
Kerry Von Erich (aka Texas Tornado)
David Von Erich
Mike Von Erich
Chris Von Erich
Ross Von Erich
Marshal Von Erich
When talking about wrestling families a lot of old school fans will probably think of The Von Erichs first more than any other family. Fritz is the one that started it all, he has seen his sons successes and downfalls in this business.
Fritz Von Erich is one of the best heels in the wrestling business and best known for starting his own promotion; WCCW and tag-team run with kayfabe brother; Waldo Von Erich.
His eldest son; Kevin is the only one that is still with us today and was very underrated. Kerry is the one who found big success not only in NWA but in WWF as well as The Texas Tornado. David had a great future ahead of him but left the world way too early.
The youngest; Mike & Chris Von Erich aren't that gifted in terms of wrestling ability and that is the main reason why they both decided to end their lives.
Currently, Kevin's sons; Ross & Marshal Von Erich are training for NXT. They also competed in TNA as well as other promotions, continuing the legacy of their prestige family.
Chavo Guerrero Sr. (aka Chavo Classic)
Chavo Guerrero Jr.
The Guerrero family are no doubt the biggest and most successful wrestling family in Mexico. The patriarch of said family is; Gory Guerrero. He is best known as a tag-team partner of El Santo and the inventor of the ever-famous submission hold; Camel Clutch.
All of his sons became professional wrestlers, being the most successful is the late great Eddie Guerrero! His eldest Chavo Sr. was also quite successful mainly in Mexico, he also wrestled for a short time in WWE.
Mando while being a pro wrestler, was more known as a movie stuntman. Finally Hector Guerrero is probably best known for playing the role of the infamous; Gobbledy Gooker before being a TNA Spanish Commentator in the latter part of his career.
Chavo Guerrero Jr. was also successful, mainly as a tag-team to his uncle Eddie in WWE where they were known as Los Guerreros. Chavo was also a mainstay in WWE's Cruiserweight division at the time.
Eddie's wife; Vickie became a WWE Personality as a GM for SmackDown in many years and was really a great heel, if you were annoyed by Vickie then that means she did her job well! I heard she is now engaged again so congratulations on finding love second time around.
Eddie & Vickie's oldest daughter; Shaul used to wrestle for NXT until being released back in 2013. She is currently engaged to NXT superstar; Aiden English.
Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart
Davey Boy Smith (aka The British Bulldog)
Harry Smith (aka David Hart Smith)
If The Guerreros are the biggest family in Mexico, it was The Harts who dominated in Canada! Stu Hart is one of the toughest son-of-a-guns in wrestling and has trained many superstars and legends through the years, his sons included!
Bret Hart is the most successful out of all of them and became the self proclaimed "best there is,best there was,and best there ever will be!" The youngest Owen Hart had a bright future ahead of him but that was abruptly cut due to the infamous incident that caused his life.
Bruce & Keith Hart mainly wrestled for their father's promotion; Stampede Wrestling. They both wrestled once in WWF in the Survivor Series PPV with brothers; Bret & Owen when they took on HBK & his "knights."
Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart and Davey Boy Smith both married the daughters of Stu Hart and became a part of the Hart Family.
Harry Smith (aka David Hart Smith) is the son of the late great Davey Boy Smith and was partnered with Tyson Kidd and they were managed by Natalya (daughter of Jim Neidhart.) Together they formed the Hart Dynasty in their early run on the WWE, when Smith left he returned to the indies. Kidd & Natalya are still with the WWE and have been married since.
"High Chief" Peter Maivia
The Wild Samoans (Afa & Sika)
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson
The Tonga Kid
Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka
The Usos (Jimmy & Jey)
There is no other bigger wrestling family than the Anoa'i family and they have produced legends and superstars through the many years!
To start with the patriarch himself; "High Chief" Peter Maivia who has found success all over the United States and eventually started his own promotion; NWA: Hawaii.
Then The Wild Samoans (Afa & Sika) dominated the tag-team division of WWF back in the early 70's. Afa's sons all became professional wrestlers, some wrestled for WWE some don't; Samu,Manu,LA Smooth, and Black Pearl.
Sika's sons wrestled for the WWE; Rosey who was partnered with cousin; Jamal as 3 Minute Warning and eventually became the superhero sidekick of The Hurricane. The other one is current WWE Superstar; Roman Reigns.
Other members of the family are; former WWF Champion Yokozuna, the three fatu brothers; Rikishi,Umaga, and The Tonga Kid. Rikishi's sons Jimmy & Jey Usos are also current WWE Superstars. Through marriage Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka became related to the Anoa'i Family and his daugher; Tamina and son; Sim Snuka all wrestled for WWE.
Samu's son; Lance Anoa'i is currently wrestling in the independent circuit, mainly for Pro Wrestling Syndicate.
And of course mentioning the Anoa'i family isn't complete without the biggest name they've produced; Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson arguably the biggest name not only in wrestling, but in pop culture history as well! His father Rocky Johnson was the first black tag-team champion with Tony Atlas.
