Household Names are people who are well known by the public. Today we are gonna be counting down wrestlers who only didn't achieve fame in the wrestling business but also in pop culture industry as a whole!
Now what makes household name wrestlers different among others is that they are almost known by everybody! If you ask somebody about wrestling, these are the people that may go through in their minds first!
So without further ado, let's rank down the 10 Biggest Household Names in Professional Wrestling!
Bob Remus' character: Sgt. Slaughter was heavily involved in the G.I. Joe franchise, he appeared in the comic books, cartoons, and even in the movie! He is also one of the few real life people to have a G.I. Joe Action Figures, the others being William "Refrigerator" Perry,"Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and Astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Sgt. Slaughter is often noted as one of the most successful characters in the action figure industry, with several versions of his figures being released through the years!
Sarge also made appearances on various TV shows, movies, and cartoons during the 80's until the early 90's. If you're a kid during those days I'm sure you had an action figure or any memorabilia of Sgt. Slaughter!
Lesnar achieved success not only in wrestling but also in Mixed Martial Arts. His career was massively followed by the media, gaining fame throughout the world!
He is the first and only man to become NCAA,WWE,IWGP,and UFC Champion. Lesnar also made history by being the only person to appear in a WWE,UFC,and NFL video game!
Lesnar gained fame in his big debut on the WWE as an unstoppable monster! After he left the company he decided to join the NFL but wasn't able to compete due to injuries. He later went on to Japan and had a semi-successful career, becoming IWGP Champion.
It was in 2008 when Brock went on to UFC to become one of the biggest names in the company! He would defeat Randy Couture to become UFC Heavyweight Champion! Brock held the belt for 707 days, successfully defending the belt on two other fights until getting defeated by Frank Mir on their second encounter.
When Brock retired in UFC, he returned to WWE to a massive pop by the crowd! Since his return he has already defeated some of the biggest names in WWE today: John Cena,Triple H,CM Punk, and of course The Undertaker wherein he broke The Phenom's Undefeated Streak at WrestleMania 30.
Ask your dads, moms, and grandparents on what they know about wrestling during their time and surely Ric Flair would be one of the names that they will mention!
Outside of wrestling The Nature Boy had his fair share of appearances such as in the TV show: Baywatch where he appeared along with other WCW wrestlers. He also appeared in an episode of Stuff You Should Know and was a voice actor for a video game: Commander Douglas Hill.
Flair made his film debut at Magic Mike XXL. Of course a lot of people will never forget about his famous catchphrase: WOOOO!
Jerry "The King" Lawler
The feud between Jerry Lawler & Andy Kaufman was one of the most talked about topics in the 80's and gave professional wrestling the relevancy that it well deserves!
Lawler & Kaufman would later wrestle in the ring, Kaufman would received 2 Piledrivers from The King sending him to the hospital! The duo would later appear in the David Letterman Show where Lawler slapped Kaufman with the comedian responding by throwing coffee to Lawler. This feud was also featured in SNL!
Please do remember that back then that kayfabe was alive and well so a lot of people actually thought that the feud between these two were for real, hell even today some people think that they actually still got heat with one another even though Lawler later revealed that he was good friends with Andy.
Lawler also appeared in the film Man on the Moon starring Jim Carrey which is a film about Andy Kaufman. He also appeared on various Video Games and has played other cameo roles in the movies, he even tried politics at one point!
The live heart attack of Jerry Lawler in 2012 was also covered by the media all over the world! Luckily he managed to survive and is doing well today, he still commentates for WWE and sometimes wrestles in various indie promotions in Memphis.
First off he does a lot of charity work and helps a lot of sick children. Thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation he has granted about 500 wishes for children with life-threatening disease, making a history for the most granted wishes in the foundation's history! That alone makes him a hero to a lot of children in the world and being widely respected by many parents & other adults!
Secondly he has starred on various movies most notably The Marine which garnered over $30,000,000 in total! He also starred in other movies by WWE Studios: 12 Rounds and Legendary. He also appeared in Fred: The Movie. Now I gotta admit, Cena's movies aren't really masterpieces, but it sure damn well kept him relevant.
And let's be honest for a moment here, he is the best known active wrestler today! John Cena is basically the Hulk Hogan of this generation and whether you like it or not, you have to live with that fact! I also compare him to LeBron James of the NBA, they are both big stars of their respective industries and they also gain a lot of hate from it.
Now I'm not a John Cena fan by all means, I'm tired of his character but I sure respect the guy for all his work. Let's remember to hate the John Cena character and not the actual person because the man is actually one of the nicest people around the world! (Now bring in the hate!)
The Ultimate Warrior - His character was one of the most notable gimmicks of all time! While he may not be considered as a great in-ring performer, he was still a big name during his heyday.
The Undertaker - There are only few people who were big names during all three eras of WWE/F and that is The Undertaker. While he did not do a lot outside of wrestling, his character is still being remembered by many.
Batista - With his current movie career, Batista gained a much more massive following! Most notable performance was his role as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Triple H - Has been involved with various movies through the years, while they were some of the best he still did well. HHH has also appeared on a couple of talk shows and is still one of the top names in wrestling today.
El Santo - The most well known Luchador in all of Mexico and is considered as a National Hero there! He has also starred in over 54 films!
Gorgeous George - One of the most well known wrestlers of all time during the "First Golden Age of Wrestling" due to his never-before-seen (at the time) gimmick. George has appeared in multiple movies,tv shows, and books among others.
Antonio Inoki - If Mexico had El Santo then Japan has Antonio Inoki! Inoki is one of the most well known athletes in all of Japan and is massively respected by the people there. He has made appearances in movies and cartoons and has been referenced in various animes, he is also heavily involved in politics.
Jesse Ventura - Speaking of politics here's a man that made a name for himself not only in wrestling but also as a politician too. Ventura wasn't only remembered as the former Governor of Minnesota but also in his movie appearances on Predator and Running Man.
The Road Warriors - The most well known tag-team all over the world especially during the 80's!
Mick Foley - Made appearances for various movies,TV and radio shows through the years. He is also a multi-awarded author and also well known for his charity work.
Bronko Nagurski - The first man to become successful in transitioning in sports, Bronko was a successful football player before becoming a two-time NWA Champion!
Primo Carnera - Had a successful career both as a boxer & wrestler. Multiple time Boxing Heavyweight Champion and has starred in different films!
"Macho Man" Randy Savage
With his larger than life character and overall charisma, The Macho Man has starred in 5 films and dozens of tv shows through the years! Some of his notable performances was as "Bonesaw" in Spider Man and his appearance on Ready to Rumble.
Of course who could forget about his endorsements with Slim Jim with the famous lines "Snap into a Slim Jim, oooh yeah!" which is still famous to this day thanks to the internet!
Savage is also infamously known for his "rap career." He has also made a lot of appearances in various video games whether it's wrestling or on other games like Skyrim thanks to modding!
"Stone Cold" Steve Austin
After retiring in wrestling, Stone Cold has made appearances in multiple movies such as The Expendables,Hunt to Kill,Maximum Conviction,The Condemned, and many more!
He also currently hosts Steve Austin's Broken Skull Ranch and is running one of the biggest podcasts in the podcast world today: The Steve Austin Show (aka The Stone Cold Podcast.)
Stone Cold has also made appearances in over 31 video games and dozens of TV Shows through the years!
Andre the Giant
Most notable for his appearances in Six Million Dollar Man and his role for The Princess Bride which became a cult classic in film history! Andre is also the first ever man to have an action figure of himself in wrestling!
Due to his massive size he was a big draw on wherever he wrestled, whether it's in the US,Japan,Europe,or Mexico. He also made memorable appearances on late night talk shows such as in David Letterman Show.
It seems like every single person in this planet right now knows who The Rock is, and some of them don't even know that he came from wrestling! One of the most well known actors today, The Rock has starred in some of the most successful movies in history!
In 2013 he was named the top-grossing actor with his films bringing in $1.3 Billion worldwide! I know some of his movies aren't really the best but hey he is still considered an icon so you really can't argue that.
The Rock has also made appearances on various media platforms like talk shows,TV shows, cartoons, comic books, and many more. Like some people said he is a great ambassador for wrestling and will always be loved by many people!
You gotta wonder if he stayed as the Rocky Maivia character back in the early days of his career, would he still become a blockbuster phenomenon that he is today?
Ask a person in the street on whose wrestlers they know and Hulk Hogan will surely one of the answers if not the only answer! Thanks to his massive popularity in the 80's, Hulk Hogan made wrestling a worldwide phenomenon!
Sure he may not be the most technical wrestler of all time but with his stardom alone and charisma he doesn't need any over the top move to get massive cheers from the fans! Even to this day after all the controversies, Hogan still has a lot of fans and remains to have a huge cult following.
Like I said he has starred in various movies, most notably Rocky III,No Holds Barred,Mr. Nanny, and Santa with Muscles just to name a few. He was also a part on one of the most well known reality shows in US which was Hogan Knows Best starring him and his family.
If basketball has Michael Jordan, then wrestling has Hulk Hogan. And if you cannot accept that, then you're just basically an ignorant.
