We all know wrestling is scripted and for the most part, the wrestlers that are in the ring actually try to help each other on not to hurt themselves but some wrestlers get pissed off to their opponent usually by not selling or just being a total jerk to them.
So today as the title would suggest, were gonna countdown the 10 infamous wrestling matches that turned real or became shoots. If you didn't saw one not make it on the list, make sure to leave down a comment below!
Akira Maeda vs Riki Choshu
This shoot actually happened in a 6 Man Tag-Team Match but the only ones involved are Maeda and Riki Choshu. So the story here is that Maeda is really starting to make his way to the top of UWF and becoming the promotion's biggest rising star. But when he heard of the news that the legend Riki Choshu is returning to the company, Maeda feared for his top spot.
Because of his anger or jealousy while competing in a 6 Man Tag-Team Match, Maeda kicked Choshu straight in the face, breaking Choshu's nose! After that Maeda was fired.
There was also another incident involving Maeda that almost made it on this list, it was when he kicked Satoru Sayama (the original Tiger Mask) straight in the balls, literally knocking out Sayama.
Stanislaus Zbyszko vs Wayne Munn
So for those who don't know them let's meet the wrestlers involved in this match; Stanislaus Zbyszko is one of the most popular wrestlers in his time and is the most popular European wrestler back then. His opponent Wayne Munn is a big guy who is under Ed "Strangler" Lewis' care, he doesn't really got much of a shoot wrestling background.
So the story goes that for the match Wayne Munn is supposed to keep his heavyweight championship but Joe Stecher (Ed Lewis' rival) told Zbyszko to get Munn's title the hard way, Zbyszko did not cooperate with Munn at all during the match and tried to pin him multiple times during the match until finally when Zbyszko pinned Munn for the last time, the referee counted fast and the European Strongman won the match and the title!
This is believe as one of the first, if not the first ever screwjob in wrestling history!
(P.S. Stanislaus Zbyszko is not related to WWE HOF'er Larry Zbyszko)
Vader vs Stan Hansen
While these two got no bad blood against one another an unintentional incident happened while they were having a match, Hansen was throwing punches to Vader when he accidentally did hit one of them straight to his face having one of Vader's eyeballs to pop out of the socket!!!
Luckily Vader was able to adjust back it in and continued the match like a boss! I honestly think this is worst than getting your ear off (cheers Mick Foley!)
Brock Lesnar vs "Hardcore" Bob Holly
Holly would usually haze and bully newcomers to the WWE but he just mess with the wrong person and that person being Brooooock Lesnaaaaar (as Paul Heyman would say!)
Anyways, obviously Brock isn't taking the shit Holly is giving him backstage so when they had a match together, Lesnar powerbombed Holly straight to the neck and injuring Holly in the process! If you watch the video, it was a very dangerous situation and could've put Holly's life in danger but hey that's what you get for being such a bully!
Goldberg vs William Regal
So back then Goldberg was booked as an unstoppable force and would usually just squash his opponents, but however William Regal isn't having any of that and actually toyed with Goldberg for a bit during the match.
Regal (though no real punches or kicks) wrestled Goldberg the way the man never experienced before and that is technical wrestling, Regal was actually able to show that Goldberg does have quite the talent for being booked as a "big brute who only knows few moves." Goldberg still won though but it was surely a night he will always remember.
After this match, Regal was fired because the WCW crew aren't happy with his actions. Regal told in his book that this match wasn't a shoot but Goldberg likes to differ, it's really up to you on who to believe.
Andre the Giant vs Akira Maeda
There are many stories about this match and it's really up to you on what to believe, some say it was a worked shoot, others claim both men don't want to lose to one another, and others claim that Antoni Inoki (president of NJPW) told Andre to teach Maeda a lesson as he goes to NJPW after being fired in UWF.
So as we go to the match Andre was actually drunk in the match and no-sold any of Maeda's moves. This made Maeda angry and began legitimately kicking Andre in the legs, even making The Giant fall a couple of times. After Andre was starting to get real hurt, Antonio Inoki came in to the ring and requested to stop the match.
Afterwards Andre and Maeda were still talking trash to one another. I really don't know which side of the story am I gonna believe on this one because most theories of it are believable, which one do YOU believe?
"Earthquake" John Tenta vs Koji Kitao
So in a WWF/SWS collaboration event (I wish they do these kind of stuff again today) Kitao was booked to lose against Tenta but due to his pride Kitao did not cooperate with Tenta during the match and no-sold all of his moves.
At this point Tenta is already pissed at him and during a suplex attempt, Kitao got literally tossed to the ground by Tenta. Now that he has been humiliated in his eyes and just pure anger coming out of him, Kitao tried to break Tenta's arm but he failed and got slap in the face!!!
After this Kitao tried poking Tenta in the eyes but Earthquake just stands there and having none of his shit, Kitao ragesand kicks the referee intentionally, after the match he grabbed a microphone and shouted to the rest of the crowd "wrestling is fake!" After this no one has heard of Kitao's sorry ass again because he has been banned by most promotions.
New Jack vs Gypsy Joe
New Jack told in an interview that he wasn't happy he was booked to an old man and a comedy act like Gypsy Joe and that he told the promoter he will go crazy on him! So as the match goes by, Joe is absolutely no selling any of New Jack's moves but the one that Jack claimed that got his temper off is when Joe intentionally headbutted him straight in the nose!
This is where shit got crazy fast as New Jack just started to do a lot of crazy stuff to Joe such as hitting and throwing him chairs multiple times! Just watch the video above but warning, if you do not like brutal stuff it isn't really for you.
There was also another lesser known shoot match involving good ol' Gypsy Joe and it was against Taz. This happened in Japan, according to Taz everyone backstage told him that he should just go easy on Joe because he is a "frail old man." But Taz was surprised because Joe was working stiff with him and thought this was a rib to him by the people backstage and started brawling with Joe!
Look I know Gypsy Joe was a good wrestler, but that was when he wasn't old! He just became a no-sold old wannabe tough guy when he became a senior and honestly, he shouldn't be wrestling anymore at the age of 80!!!
Antonio Inoki vs The Great Antonio
So the story goes is that everyone was going crazy about The Great Antonio at the time because of his involvement with The Guiness Book of World Records so they decided to book him in a match against Antonio Inoki! Unfortunately for The Great Antonio is that he learned a lesson not to mess with a man like Inoki!
Basically Great Antonio was no-selling Inoki's moves which is already a big NO especially if you're wrestling in Japan! After that he started to legitimately punch Inoki in the back, making the Japanese legend piss. Inoki started to palm strike Great Antonio and as he goes down, kicking him the face multiple times until the referee stopped the match!
The Mass Transit Incident
I'm sure most of you knew what happened already but basically; Axl Rotten and D-Von Dudley were supposed to face The Gangstas (New Jack & Mustafa Saed) in a match on the PPV "Barely Legal" but Axl no showed. Eric Kulas who then went by the ring name "Mass Transit" told Paul Heyman that he should replace Axl in the match and even told Heyman that he was 19 years old and trained by Killer Kowalski, but none of these things were true (he was only 17 when this happened.)
Before the match, Kulas asked New Jack to blade him so he could "shine" and possibly become famous in the wrestling business and of course it's New Jack were talking about here so he agreed.
The match was supposed to be a squash match and The Gangstas managed to isolate D-Von quickly and they quickly double teamed on Kulas. New Jack then started beating up Kulas with various objects such as toasters, crutches, and more. Finally he bladed Kulas with a knife but accidentally cut too deep and severed two of Kulas' arteries having him to pass out. New Jack was then heard saying "you alright?" so it was clearly not his intention to hurt him.
Kulas' father during the match screamed "Ring the fucking bell! He's only 17!" and the medics rushed and helped Kulas. After that New Jack then cut a controversial promo saying "He's white, I don't like white people, I don't like people from Boston. I'm the wrong n**** to fuck with."
The video shown above is just a tiny clip of the match, if you wanna watch the full version click here!
(WARNING: if you cannot take too much blood or eating, I really don't recommend watching it.)
