Most of the time it's because of the wrestlers who were playing the gimmick very well that the fans are attached to them and would love to see more.
Here we look at the 10 odd gimmicks but turned out to be successful in WWE's history.
Koko B. Ware
Before coming in the WWE,Koko B. Ware had actually found some quite successful already in various NWA Regions and other promotions under different ringnames.
What probably made people hooked to his gimmick is his energy that he gives every match,at one point he was even partnered with Owen Hart and they were known "High Energy." It wasn't a successful tag-team though.
Although he never won a single belt in WWE,he would still be a memorable wrestler to many fans!
Honky Tonk Man
Honky Tonk Man is one of the best heels in his time and holds the record of the longest Intercontinental Championship reign,so yeah this gimmick lasted for many years!
A part of why this gimmick also lasted long is because of it's catchy theme song. Just listen to it!
But when they came in the WWE,a lot of things changed. They became face lickers and arm swingers who love to march in a weird way. Speaking of weird, they also do a lot of weird promos every time!
Even though obviously being ridiculous,a lot of fans loved them (mostly children) and they even became WWE Tag-Team Champions. It's probably because of there catchy phraseline and generally funny stints.
Until now I'm actually still not sure what his gimmick exactly is other than being obviously pure bizzare! Dustin Rhodes had a great tag-team run with his father; Dusty but we never expected him to turn like this!
Anyways,I gotta admit I used to be a fan of Goldust around in the Attitude Era with his involvement with Booker T,it was really fun watching them together.
A man who has the words "HELP ME!" written on his forehead backwards, plus an odd companion which is; a mannequin head (whom he talks to.) This sounds nothing like a joke doesn't it? Well yeah it is but it turned out successful.
Al Snow has been a jobber for many years, but this gimmick changed his career and would lead him to various championship wins such as; Hardcore,European, and Tag-Team Championships. It would also be the gimmick that fans will remember whenever you say the name "Al Snow" not that much more stupid Avatar gimmick.
Irwin R. Schyster (IRS)
It was hard to take this gimmick seriously, but with Mike Rotunda's wrestling skills and partnership with The Million Dollar Man the gimmick worked!
IRS became a three time tag-team champion with DiBiase and there team even defeated Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake at WrestleMania.
It sounds very ridiculous on paper but when you see how Hurricane actually acts and talks in the ring, you can't resist to laugh! He has won various titles most of them tag-team titles with Kane and Rosey.
Until now even he's been released in the WWE,Shane Helms continues to portray The Hurricane in various indy promotions.
In the late 60's WWE (WWWF at that time) decided to rip off one of DC Comics' famous character; Batman and call him "The Battman" played by Tony Marino.
The crowd actually liked it and The Battman had several victories in his career including some against Hall of Famers; Johnny Rodz and "Baron" Mikel Scicluna.
At one point in his career he even became a tag-team partner to none other than; Bruno Sammartino!
I myself can't believe it either that this gimmick exists but it does. It's the 60's what do you expect!
This real creepy freak actually never won a single belt in WWE but people still remember him to this day! At some point he even had a little sidekick named "Mini Boogey" as seen in the photo above.
The Boogeyman had some memorable feuds with the likes of JBL,Finlay, and Booker T.
Anyways,The Undertaker is supposed to be this immortal zombie dude (with less craving for brains.) Even though the gimmick sounds cheesy and weird,it was obviously one of the most successful gimmicks ever and would make Mark Callaway a legend in the industry of professional wrestling.
There are many reasons why this gimmick became successful and here are some of them:
1 - Mark Callaway is a talented wrestler, despite his size the man can do a lot of things in the action so you can expect a lot from him!
2 - A lot of the feuds and matches he's been involved were really great like matches with Jake Roberts,Hulk Hogan,Diesel,King Kong Bundy, etc.
3 - When Paul Bearer became his manager, more people became interested in the gimmick and were attached to it!
All in all,The Undertaker is the most odd but successful gimmick ever in pro wrestling history!
